09:17:53 <srhb> Hi! Does a module for displaying multiple workspaces on a single physical monitor exist?
09:25:10 <Liskni_si> srhb: yes, but it can be done using xrandr 1.5 alone
09:25:47 <Liskni_si> (I don't remember the module name otherwise I'd tell you :-))
09:27:05 <srhb> Liskni_si: Yeah, I've done it with addmonitor stuff with xrandr. I'm trying to bring it into xmonad instead, because switching between the xrandr modes is a little uncomfortable :)
09:27:37 <srhb> (For instance, I would like the ability to switch quickly to having something span my entire very wide monitor)
09:29:45 <Liskni_si> Oh
09:36:56 <srhb> Maybe I don't want workspaces, but some other kind of sublayout.
09:38:35 <Liskni_si> https://hackage.haskell.org/package/xmonad-contrib-0.16/docs/XMonad-Layout-LayoutScreens.html
09:39:26 <srhb> Liskni_si: Thanks!
09:39:40 <srhb> That looks perfect.

10:57:55 <srhb> Liskni_si: That's.. life-changing. :D Needs some tuning for nice resizing options etc, but it's really great. Thanks again!
10:58:56 <Liskni_si> srhb: you're welcome
10:59:51 <Liskni_si> I wonder... if you had a script that would undo the xrandr --setmonitor stuff, how annoying it'd be
11:00:19 <Liskni_si> I thought we might want to deprecate LayoutScreens in favor of this, but you've got a point
11:00:31 <Liskni_si> but I'd like to understand this a bit more :-)
11:00:33 <srhb> Liskni_si: I had that, and it's "ok" -- but going on/off split/full-width flickers and it's hard to do math to resize things, I imagine it's easier in xmonad.
11:02:03 <Solid> if we deprecated anything that could "just be done in a script" I reckon contrib would look a lot thinner ;)
11:02:32 <srhb> Sure, but I initially thought this was trivial with xrandr as well -- and was easy enough -- so xmonad didn't need to even know about the real monitor.
11:02:49 <srhb> But turns out it's really not very ergonomic or flexible if you don't want to just stick with the one setting permanently.
11:03:07 <srhb> If you _do_ want that, it's great!
11:03:19 <Liskni_si> Solid: true :-)
11:03:52 <Liskni_si> Solid: but until you actually use that thing it's easy to think it doesn't need any abstraction on top of it :-)
11:04:32 <srhb> For reference, my main work setup is now a ThreeColMid split where each column is a separate workspace such that navication within the column is very convenient and fast.
11:04:35 <Liskni_si> so I guess I'll just add a note that "if you want apps other than xmonad to see the separate monitors, use randr 1.5"
