01:11:53 <brttmsn> anyone here know why on a fresh install of xmonad and xmobar i keep getting the error of hGetContents: invalid argument (invalid byte sequence)
01:13:46 × kelnoky quits (~shao@ip1f1285ec.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de) (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
01:25:31 <Liskni_si> brttmsn: most likely because you're not using the xmobar pipe anywhere
01:25:50 <brttmsn> im using the same config ive always used and its always worked before
01:26:24 <Liskni_si> oh, "invalid byte sequence" is something else than I thought, sorry
01:26:31 Liskni_si is tired
01:26:47 <brttmsn> its cool. I just dont understand why im getting invalid byte sequence
01:27:11 <Liskni_si> my next tip is something with locales
01:27:45 <brttmsn> wait, i remember my tty kicking something back about my LANG not being set
01:27:49 <brttmsn> could that affect it?
01:27:53 <Liskni_si> could be related
01:28:03 <Liskni_si> maybe you're using some locale that wasn't generated using locale-gen or something
01:28:26 <Liskni_si> I don't really know much about this since I'm using a traditional oldschool distro that doesn't let me fuck this up
01:29:03 <Liskni_si> https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/locale
01:29:06 <Liskni_si> I'd look here
01:29:40 <brttmsn> yeah i just corrected my locale and reran the command to generate it
01:29:45 <brttmsn> still getting the error
01:30:09 <brttmsn> xmobar: /home/brtt/.config/xmobar/xmobarrc: hGetContents: invalid argument (invalid byte sequence)
01:30:15 <brttmsn> that's the exact error
01:30:39 <Liskni_si> oh, you're getting the error while reading the config, not while reading from the pipe
01:30:55 <Liskni_si> then maybe you just have some invalid byte sequence in the config :-)
01:31:01 <brttmsn> english?
01:31:47 <Liskni_si> what's your locale?
01:31:56 <Liskni_si> (LANG, or LC_ALL, or whatever)
01:32:11 <brttmsn> LANG=en_US.UTF-8
01:34:17 <brttmsn> should i try rebooting now that i fixed that and see if that works?
01:34:54 <Liskni_si> if you had different LANG before, then logoff and login again might help, yeah

12:49:44 <Solid> "I don't know why you think the build script is the problem"
12:49:49 <Solid> *removes build script, works*
12:49:52 <Solid> every time
12:51:27 dxld joins (~dxld@rush.pub.dxld.at)
13:00:00 <geekosaur> we do need to revise the build script examples, since cabal 3.x the default is new-build
13:00:25 <geekosaur> and old-build is deprecated. but our cabal example script requires old-build and assumes it is default
13:01:40 <geekosaur> I should say v1-build
13:02:00 <Solid> there is a `build-with-cabal-new.sh'
13:02:16 <geekosaur> right, point is that needs to be the default cabal workflow now
13:02:30 <Solid> ah I see
13:02:33 <geekosaur> it's not "new" as of cabal 3.x (cabal 3.4 about to come out)
13:03:23 <geekosaur> so some of our build script issues are people trying to use the cabal v1 script with cabal 3, which won't work
13:04:10 <geekosaur> and if any examples use a sandbox, those are being removed in cabal 3.4
13:04:59 <Liskni_si> do we have any build script examples?
13:05:13 <geekosaur> xmonad-testing repo
13:05:17 <Liskni_si> oh :-/
13:05:19 <Solid> yeah there
13:06:04 <Liskni_si> would be awesome if someone who actually uses cabal did that
13:06:09 <Liskni_si> like, for example, peti
13:06:21 <Liskni_si> to make himself useful for once
13:07:06 <Solid> maybe if you delete the file, he'll revert and update it :>
13:08:24 <geekosaur> I will be reinstalling next weekend on a new(ish) machine and intend to use cabal workflow; maybe I can do it then
13:08:47 kelnoky joins (~shao@ip1f1285ec.dynamic.kabel-deutschland.de)
13:08:54 <Solid> that sounds much better :)
13:11:19 <geekosaur> anyway specifically what you get with cabal v1 commands used with cabal 3 is core modules being "missing" which sounds like that "bug" last night
13:12:12 <geekosaur> so I think that's what they did and that's why I bring this up. we're advertising old instructions that fail in bad ways
13:13:09 <Liskni_si> yeah there is an awful lot of content that it outdated, all over the place
13:13:12 <geekosaur> (this may be partly cabal's fault for not having enough of a difference between v1 and v2 workflows such that you get "weird" ghc errors rather than deprecation errors)
13:14:09 <Liskni_si> and with my current pace, I don't think I'll ever get to actually fixing any docs or anything :-(
13:15:25 <geekosaur> I have to rework my local setup anyway because I don't know how long hvr's repos will continue to exist, ghcup has more or less replaced them
13:16:11 <geekosaur> but I have a decent amount of local stuff that uses now obsolete cabal workflows including one sandbox that I need to make go away :/
13:17:43 <geekosaur> but I'm not getting much of anything done today, I'm set up in a waiting room

20:41:14 <Solid> Liskni_si: I think #450 at this point is acceptable and probably doesn't need its own module anymore; what do you think?
20:41:56 <Liskni_si> Solid: the spacing in that PR is about as random as it was when I first saw it
20:42:09 <Liskni_si> and I really don't think it's my browser's cache's fault :-/
20:42:27 <Solid> spacing?
20:42:37 <Liskni_si> both vertical and horizontal :-)
20:42:41 <Solid> :)
20:42:46 <Liskni_si> (missing spaces and newlines)
20:42:53 <Solid> maybe I've been staring at it for too long
20:43:10 <Liskni_si> on the other hand there are some docs that I haven't seen before
20:43:45 <Solid> oh yes now that you mention it I see spaces missing all over the place
20:44:05 <Liskni_si> btw the motivation/idea of the PR seems similar to https://github.com/xmonad/xmonad-contrib/pull/121
20:44:18 <Solid> and they always manage to add trailing spaces again; they even added new ones after I send them a patch to remove the old ones ._.
20:44:58 <Solid> oh you're right
20:45:20 <geekosaur> yeh, the spacing in there is oddly inconsistent
20:51:33 <Liskni_si> other than that it seems nice though
20:51:46 <Liskni_si> I'll add a few comments
20:54:33 <Liskni_si> I still feel that it should go into its own module though
20:55:03 <Liskni_si> or maybe not, I don't know
20:55:54 <Solid> well if you think so then suggest it
