02:24:54 <a6a45081-2b83> how do you guys get this zoom working with xmonad, I often have audio/video/transparency/screen share problems
02:25:15 <a6a45081-2b83> it sometimes think how DEs like KDE make our life so easy

02:43:28 <jakefromstatefar> "this zoom"? As in the proprietary yuck used in business conferencing?
02:43:44 <jakefromstatefar> I've not had any problems with any video/screen share utilities.

07:05:07 <Solid> elonsroadster[m]: hence my mentioning of "easy"; imo nix is very much at the opposite end of that
07:11:39 <elonsroadster[m]> Solid how so? I keep seeing people say this and it's simply not true.
07:15:58 <Solid> If you see many people say if maybe there's some truth to it after all ;) I will freely admit that my experience with nix is rather minimal (lack of documentation made me lose interest) but with regards to Haskell packages it always felt like a lot of extra effort (over literally `stack install`) for spurious advantages
07:16:57 <Solid> what I can read from xmonad/#332 is that it's kind of non-trivial to get a proper setup where one can make changes to core/contrib and quickly recompile xmonad
07:17:02 <Solid> which seems a bit ridiculous to me
07:34:06 × defjam quits (~eb0t@90.209.55.200) (Read error: Connection reset by peer)
07:39:34 defjam joins (~eb0t@90.199.243.11)
07:41:33 <sibi> I use nixos daily in my main work and home machine and I will admit that it's not easy. There is an initial learning curve there and I wouldn't recommend it to others if they want something simple.
07:44:55 <deebo> if i want to use xmonad but have some "modern desktop" features (tray + network etc widgets, calendar, sound...) what's the easiest combo?
07:45:24 <deebo> i've been using ubuntu mate with `xmonad --replace` for years but i have some really annoying sleep wakeup issues and need to change something
07:54:07 <sibi> deebo: There are some recommendations here: https://xmonad.org/download.html
08:08:13 <elonsroadster[m]> <Solid> "what I can read from xmonad/#332..." <- Well I mean that's a different question isn't it? Being able to easily contribute is separate from the question of what the easiest way to set things up is. I just think that this idea that it's hard is not founded on anything, and in fact, setting it up with nix does not even require you to have anything except for nix itself to be installed.
08:11:54 <elonsroadster[m]> <deebo> "if i want to use xmonad but have..." <- Taffybar was made with this (especially the tray part in mind) xmobar is what most xmobar users use these days, but tray support is not included (although there are ways to set up stalonetray or trader to work with this). However trader and stalone tray are xembed tray implementations, which is deprecated and generally quite broken, imo.

08:18:41 <mc47[m]> xmobar with trayer work, and it's good enough as long as you don't want images and transparency
08:21:16 <mc47[m]> Tbh I haven't tried any other status bar, and battlefield 2042 needs to be delayed again before I do lol

09:04:40 <elonsroadster[m]> <mc47[m]> "xmobar with trayer work, and it..." <- I think we should really stop pushing xembed on people since its been deprecated for over a decade now and it does not play nicely with multi-head at all. It's also super glitchy, generally. StatusNotifierItem is a way better tray system. You xmobar types should figure out how to replace trayer with https://github.com/taffybar/status-notifier-item . I'm happy to provide support/flags to
09:04:40 <elonsroadster[m]> the standalone binary there to make it easier to do.

14:42:21 <jakefromstatefar> Is there a way for me to convert my network traffic display in xmobar to use dynamic units? For example, if I'm using 1500KB, then it'd say ~1.5MB; rather than just staying in KB the whole time.
14:42:35 <jakefromstatefar> *?
14:43:08 <jakefromstatefar> But, stay as KB, when sub MB, and MB when (basically always) sub GB.

16:33:30 <jakefromstatefar> Yes, but over long-term management? Stack and Cabal are so brittle!
16:33:38 <jakefromstatefar> I've broken both too many times.
16:33:59 <jakefromstatefar> Stack less so, but still.

16:37:06 <Solid> broken how? rolling over to a new stack resolver and having things break would seem like an upstream issue that we need to fix (but the CI also runs on the most recently released GHC, so I think we'd catch that before stackage updates)
16:47:39 <jakefromstatefar> I've broken a package/broken my store multiple times.
16:47:59 <jakefromstatefar> Then, because of how cabal and stack work, it took a lot of effort to hunt down everything to remove.
16:48:17 <jakefromstatefar> Plus, uninstalling, at least afaik is a big pain.
16:51:38 <Solid> that mostly sounds like cabal issues, of which I have absolutely no idea (uninstalling a stack package is quite literally deleting the directory and the symlink in ~/.local/bin for me)
16:53:15 <geekosaur> there's a recent package that helps with cleaning uo cabal, but recent versions are much less likely to break like that
16:56:09 <jakefromstatefar> How recent are we talking? Just 8 months ago was when the cabal catastrophe I dealt with occurred.
16:56:56 <geekosaur> cabal 3, which I'm not sure was released in a stable version 8 months ago, cabal 2 was still the stable release
16:57:08 <geekosaur> the cleanup util was released a few days ago
16:58:24 <geekosaur> hm, sorry, the cleanup util doesn't clean the store, just dist-newstyle
