00:47:35 <Rotaerk> hmm, I see some full screen related stuff in the xmonad API, or at least xmonad-contrib, but could someone explain or link me to an explanation of the general strategy for using full screen programs like games or videos?
00:48:32 <Rotaerk> I just tried steam in linux for the first time, and it worked great, but the borders and xmobar are still visible even if the game's in full screen.  same if I'm watching, say, a video stream full screen
00:51:31 <Rotaerk> hmm wait, the xmonad configuration tutorial mentions it... been a while since I looked at it.  I'll see if that's enough to get me going

03:36:35 <Rotaerk> yeah so much has changed since I last messed with configuring xmonad...

05:04:07 <Rotaerk> liskin[m] / liskin, hi, I see you've made some changes over time to the EWMH desktop module in xmonad-contrib ... mind if I ask you a question about it?
05:05:27 <Rotaerk> I'm seeing significant overlap between XMonad.Hooks.EwmhDesktops and XMonad.Layout.Fullscreen
05:05:52 <Rotaerk> the latter does some nice things, like hide borders when something goes full screen
05:06:09 <Rotaerk> while the former sets things up with EWMH or whatever
05:06:48 <Rotaerk> I think you can't use them together because their event handlers do very similar things
05:07:28 <Rotaerk> is my understanding off here, or has there been any thought around ... reconciling these two modules?
05:08:32 <Rotaerk> they also don't seem very modular.  like it'd be nice if I could piece together the border-hiding behavior with the EWMH behavior
05:11:27 <Rotaerk> kind of tempted to rip out pieces of these modules and build a custom thing right in my xmonad.hs...

05:20:12 Rotaerk joins (~Rotaerk@2601:989:200:6a0:c56b:8e03:af34:190b)
05:21:28 <[Leary]> Rotaerk: I don't use either module so I can't really comment on them, but have you looked at X.L.NoBorders?
05:22:06 <Rotaerk> actually, I think I've got it working. it seems to work with `ewmh` from X.L.EwmhDesktops and `fullscreenSupportBorder` from X.L.Fullscreen
05:22:45 <Rotaerk> the `ewmh` one makes it so that if I, say, fullscreen a youtube video, xmonad treats it as fullscreen... while the `fullscreenSupportBorder` makes it actually *handle* fullscreen properly
05:24:04 <Rotaerk> I did notice NoBorders, which lets me manually toggle borders off/on, but in this case I want it to happen automatically in the event of a window becoming fullscreen
05:24:24 <Rotaerk> the `fullscreenSupportBorder` seems to do it well
05:40:29 <liskin> I think the general recommendation is to use ewmh, ewmhFullscreen and smartBorders
05:42:37 <liskin> I do have some ideas about reconciling EwmhDesktops and Layout.Fullscreen to make them more modular and plug one into the other, but I struggled with motivation to work on this stuff lately
05:45:23 <liskin> We now have a way to add hooks to EwmhDesktops, so I wanted to add hooks for fullscreen and unfullscreen that Layout.Fullscreen would plug into, and also change the current default of unfullscreen to not just sink, but also restore original floating dimensions if the window was floating before.
05:47:46 <Rotaerk> interesting, I'll try that approach
05:48:11 <Rotaerk> I'm looking at X.L.NoBorders now and I think I *hadn't* seen it ... was thinking of something else earlier
05:50:20 <Rotaerk> oh.  I was looking at XMonad.Actions.NoBorders...
06:01:30 <Rotaerk> worked like a charm; thanks!
06:19:26 <Rotaerk> hmm setting position to `TopW R 90` doesn't seem to work, only left-alignment seems to respect the %

09:59:10 <liskin> Yeah, if I hadn't been a Haskeller before, I'm fairly sure the deps/build of xmonad would have scared me away :-(
09:59:44 <liskin> And we have very few deps compared to almost any other Haskell project.
10:00:42 <liskin> If only we could just depend on ghc-easy-something and compile the config ourselves and binary packages in distros would just work. That would be marvelous...
10:02:07 <liskin> (Calling rxvt-unicode bloated reminds me of how much I already succumbed to this new reality of today. For work I even have to use npm sometimes. ☹️)

20:40:24 <geekosaur> I had to go back to 2016 to find my gpg key, because I used it to rarely that I didn't even bother to move it to newer machines. at least I have final backups from most of them

20:43:07 <geekosaur> I did remember my passphrase at least :)
20:45:33 <geekosaur> key's so old I had to add my current mailing address to it
20:45:53 <geekosaur> and has one address that no longer works
20:56:17 <geekosaur> two, I guess: I can receive mail on it but can't figure a way to send (gmail assumes it's another mail host, not merely a forwarding service)
20:59:31 <geekosaur> but github at least considers it verified, so I guess I'm ok

23:20:26 <geekosaur> because this one's already known and signed by a few haskell people
23:21:04 <geekosaur> granting that some of those are expired or revoked; I need to clean my keyring at some point
