2023-03-01 17:02:40 <piraty> after i went full-nerd with keymaps on my new split, which i fried with ESD very recently, i now realize i need kmonad on traditional keyboards.
2023-03-01 17:06:52 utis joins (~utis@s176125235117.blix.com)
2023-03-01 17:08:36 <utis> is it possible to do something when a given set (or number) of keys are down simultaneously, having been pressed in any order?
2023-03-01 17:48:34 <piraty> technically: if the keycodes were not sent yet, sure. i don't know if kmonad can though
2023-03-01 17:48:46 <piraty> what is your use-case–
2023-03-01 18:38:35 <utis> cat lock
2023-03-01 18:42:12 <utis> it's asking a bit much i suppose
2023-03-01 20:05:15 × utis quits (~utis@s176125235117.blix.com) (Ping timeout: 268 seconds)
2023-03-02 01:12:24 <Diablo-D3[m]> so hrm, I seem to have ported my config to kanata
2023-03-02 01:14:16 <Diablo-D3[m]> all I do is turn caps into tap to esc, hold to ctrl; right alt to hyper; right win to altgr
2023-03-02 01:14:59 <Diablo-D3[m]> so instead of tap-next and around(around(around))) and whatever, its tap-hold and multi
2023-03-02 01:15:17 <Diablo-D3[m]> other than that, the files look pretty similar (other than I only have to define the keys I want to use, instead of all of them)
2023-03-02 01:20:35 <Diablo-D3[m]> the best part is, it doesn't seem to conflict with how games operate without using wintercept
2023-03-02 01:20:59 <Diablo-D3[m]> didnt except that to work without it
2023-03-02 02:30:02 <Diablo-D3[m]> also, I misspoke, I have right win set to menu, menu set to altgr

2023-03-05 07:23:26 <jeanbtrd> Solid: I don't exactly remember what I asked you (first times using irc with a bouncer, need to get used to it) but I think it was about having to create a new .kbd file and systemd service for each new keyboard. That's how I'm doing it right now, it's fine. Thank you!
2023-03-05 07:23:39 n0r joins (~n0rmatrix@2001:470:69fc:105::2:7581)
2023-03-05 07:26:48 <jeanbtrd> I'm having some problems typing $ all the time for latex, because of the sft key. Things like $x$ are a torture for my pinky. In general, I'd like to reposition sft somewhere else, have you guys got any suggestion? Caps is already mapped to (tap-hold 140 esc lctl).
2023-03-05 07:29:02 <jeanbtrd> I've tried tab as (tap-hold 140 tab sft), but I couldn't use it. Also it made alt-tab, which I use all the time, behave weirdly. I was thinking about doing space as (tap-hold 140 spc sft) but I can't have the space key have any sort of delay or weird behaviour (apart from actual space, I use it all the time in doom emacs).
2023-03-05 10:36:37 <Solid> jeanbtrd: I could instead recommend directly putting $ it on a layer
2023-03-05 10:37:26 <Solid> and then finding a convenient key for that layer (for example, I use the right Alt key as a kind of special symbol layer, and have $ on the QWERTY w key)
2023-03-05 10:38:41 <Solid> alternatively, needlessly optimise your setup so that simply pressing x<space> in a LaTeX document will generate $x$ instead :> ( https://tony-zorman.com/posts/emacs-potpourri.html#latex-for-the-lazy-mathematician )
2023-03-05 11:12:40 <jeanbtrd> Solid: I don't understand, how does that guy write actual space?
2023-03-05 11:14:16 <jeanbtrd> I'll probably try making a second layer for this stuff. Do you toggle it with right Alt or do you use it as a modifier? In any case, you still have it working as a modifiers for things like [] and {}, right?
2023-03-05 11:16:28 <jeanbtrd> Thank you btw
2023-03-05 12:00:31 <Solid> jeanbtrd: the insertion function checks whether the previous word matches some criteria and, if yes, wraps it in dollar symbols, so pressing space in any other context still inserts a space
2023-03-05 12:01:17 <Solid> and I use Ralt as a modifier, personally, since it seems easy enough to hold down whenever I need to type several symbols in a row (plus, this seldomly happens)
2023-03-05 12:02:47 <Solid> "you still have it working as a modifiers for things like [] and {}, right?" << I'm not sure what you mean by this; I use a US layout, so inserting [] and {} is done by either the dedicated key, or a shifted version thereof. I only insert () via the Ralt modifier
2023-03-05 13:01:15 <jeanbtrd> Solid: Sorry, I'm on an italian keyboard so Ralt (here called Alt Gr, don't know about US keyboards) is needed for square and curly brackets (and other stuff on the right side near return).
2023-03-05 13:07:21 <jeanbtrd> I closed by mistake so if you wrote something I've missed it. So that slot/LaTeX-self-insert function is only for single char things like $x$?
2023-03-05 13:13:26 <Solid> jeanbtrd: yes, it's mostly so that single character insertions aren't so unergonomic anymore
2023-03-05 13:24:43 <jeanbtrd> Ok thank you.

2023-03-06 07:04:15 <Solid> theclash: have you tried https://github.com/kmonad/kmonad/blob/master/doc/faq.md#q-how-do-i-get-uinput-permissions ?

2023-03-06 09:01:18 <theclash> thanks, adding the user to the input group seemed to work without creating the uinput group... or is uinput actually necessary?
2023-03-06 09:07:36 <Solid> different distros seem to handle this slightly differently, I've never bothered to dig down and find out what why/how
2023-03-06 09:07:50 <Solid> so if it works for you then you don't need to create additional groups
2023-03-06 09:50:56 <theclash> thanks
