2026-03-18 18:21:24 <Digit> curious. i've had no such pains with my emacs configuration, in xmonad, herbstluftwm, dwm, or any other wm/de.

2026-03-18 18:47:19 <geekosaur> simple configurations generally work. if it pops frames for other purposes (e.g. the hovers eldoc uses) weird things happen because it doesn't bother to mark them override_redirect or etc.

2026-03-18 22:27:29 <haskellbridge> <Icy-Thought> that makes perfect sense, geeko! Thank you for the explanation!
2026-03-18 22:32:25 <geekosaur> I've used emacs for a long time, and multiple frames have always been a bit weird. ordinary editing frames are usually fine, but eldoc, speedbar, detached minibuffer, etc. tend to misbehave
2026-03-18 22:38:51 <geekosaur> and could get it to do weird things in KDE and sawfish

2026-03-19 13:51:09 <haskellbridge> <Icy-Thought> reading the history here, river v0.4 seems like a very interesting approach to the upcoming WayMonad(? or whatever new name we decide for this awesome thing)
2026-03-19 14:27:35 <haskellbridge> <Solid> https://kf8nh.com/_heisenbridge/media/matrix.org/dHolwsZqtbjwAtiEoEpkqUHj/FOKdnCmuHOg/2026-03-19-101001_748x555_scrot.png
2026-03-19 14:28:02 <haskellbridge> <Solid> if this slop PoC is anything to go by, this would probably actually work
2026-03-19 14:28:25 <haskellbridge> <Solid> at least restarting the wm without bringing down the whole wayland session works quite nicely

2026-03-19 17:31:32 <haskellbridge> <Solid> as I said, this was just a PoC to see if what we want to do is even possible. Still, I think this is good news. tokei reports a total of 4223 lines (2404 code, 1267 comments, 552 blanks) for "wayland-client", "wayland-scanner", and "wmonad". Given that this is slop, we can probably reduce this by a fair amount even, and for a minimal working example this seems pretty good, tbh

2026-03-20 13:20:56 <liskin> Wow, good stuff
2026-03-20 13:21:46 <liskin> (what kind of slop setup do you have btw? I'm still stuck at the "looking for a good sandbox" stage myself)
2026-03-20 13:22:20 <liskin> (I mean I can just start a VM but I wanted something a bit less cumbersome and keep procrastinating...)
2026-03-20 16:29:12 <haskellbridge> <Solid> I have a firejail thing ( https://paste.tomsmeding.com/OlRiJNar ) but I'm not sure I trust it, tbh, so I'm honestly still mostly in the "approve manually" camp
2026-03-20 16:49:01 <haskellbridge> <Solid> Though this experiment makes me wonder whether porting something like wayland-rs could be done with slop assistance (these things are supposed to be good at this, right?) so we could focus on the actual fun part of the wm

2026-03-20 18:59:47 <liskin> I see. Manual approving isn't in vogue these days. I've been playing with using the Agents tab in github as that runs on their infrastructure, but I'm probably missing out on all the cool stuff I could have by running opencode or pi coding agent instead
2026-03-20 19:00:16 <liskin> Also it takes ages for it to do anything so it's only useful for well defined tasks
2026-03-20 19:17:26 gwentpl joins (~gwpl@user/gwentpl)
2026-03-20 19:36:43 <haskellbridge> <Solid> I mean I honestly feel the same way about all coding agents… especially when one is actually trying to get them to produce non-horrible, as opposed to just working, code
2026-03-20 19:37:12 <haskellbridge> <Solid> feels like every commit has to be followed by three or four cleanup commits
2026-03-20 19:42:39 <haskellbridge> <Solid> maybe I'm holding it wrong, dunno
